Yale University psychiatrist Dr. Bandy Lee is heading a group calling for a medical panel to check the mental health of the president and candidates for the White House, the Washington Examiner reports.
“Based on the experience with the current president, we are calling for regular fitness for duty exams on presidential and vice presidential candidates, preferably as a requirement sometime before they take on the job, and even preferably before they run,” said Lee, who edited the book of essays “The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump,” which concluded that President Donald Trump has shown that he is mentally unfit to run the country.
Lee and her group, most of whom have declined to reveal their identities, are demanding that presidential and vice presidential candidates submit to an examination by a panel of medical experts, and that the winners be examined every year after their election. “We would like to keep this entire process as voluntary and confidential as possible, but also in a democracy we believe the public has a right to know if a dangerous person is pursuing the presidency,” Lee said.
The panel’s members would be nominated by an independent organization like the National Academy of Medicine or a similarly respected institution for six-year terms, though one member would be replaced on an annual basis. The panel would include one clinical psychologist, one neurologist, two internists, and three neuropsychiatrists.
“It’s just like having a medical checkup to make sure you qualify before going ahead,” Lee added. “Any reasonable person should be able to submit.”
