A Washington man discovered that his truck was stolen, so he did what anyone else would: He called the police.

That wasn’t the best idea. The reason?

The man, William Kelley, had been busy burglarizing a store in Kennewick when his truck was stolen!

The incident took place Sunday around 6 a.m., the Kennewick Police Department noted in a post on Facebook. Kelley had reportedly left his keys in the parked 1992 Chevrolet pickup truck then set about his business of robbing a nearby store — a detail he conveniently chose to exclude when calling in the stolen truck.

According to the police report, a man passing by saw the keys and decided to act. He loaded his bike into the back then sped off in Kelley's truck. Video footage shows a man believed to be Kelley frantically running after the vehicle as it drives away.

When authorities investigating the case viewed surveillance footage they discovered why Kelley was not at his vehicle at the time that it was stolen — he was busy stealing items from a business across the street.

Kelley was subsequently booked into the county jail on a warrant and charged with burglary, police said. Meanwhile, they are still searching for his stolen vehicle, and the man who took it.
