President Donald Trump must make the case to the public that there is a serious crisis at the nation's southern border, and that something must be done, new Sen. Mike Braun said Tuesday.
"It is a crisis at our southern border," the Indiana Republican told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "I think it was a crisis back when Democrats were for border security a couple years ago. They recalculated for political reasons."
Braun said he would like to see Trump, in his national address Tuesday night, continue to make the case that the situation at the border is a serious crisis.
"The idea that it's an national emergency, of course, that's poohed by the other side, but if you look at the heartland, most of the states in this country, especially the places like Indiana, it's way above the 62 percent cited as a serious issue," said Braun. "He needs to keep articulating and making the case to the public this evening and we need to get something done on the border."
Meanwhile, Braun said he and Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., have introduced a "no work, no pay" bill to restrict pay for members of Congress if they don't pass a federal budget on time.
"It's very simple," he said. "If you don't have a budget in place by the end of the fiscal year, the beginning of the new one, nobody in the Senate and the Congress gets a paycheck," said Braun. "It's not like that's a hard bar to adhere to. You've got a year, you know, to work on it and that should be plenty of time to get a budget out in regular order."
