A fire believed caused by lightning has shut down a system capturing oil from a gushing well in the Gulf of Mexico, according to BP, whose well is spilling millions of gallons of oil.
The fire, which was spotted around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday on a drill ship called the Discoverer Enterprise, was extinguished quickly, BP said.
Nobody was injured, but a system siphoning oil from a containment cap above the well was shut down as a precaution, BP said.
The capture operation was expected to resume later Tuesday.
