New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has maintained a diminished presence at City Hall, according to The New York Times.

The Big Apple Democrat rarely meets with many of his commissioners, the newspaper noted. It makes it more difficult for department heads to inform the mayor about problems or advance new ideas.

In 2016, de Blasio spent an average of 19 days a month in City Hall. Through September of this year, he has averaged 10 days, his official schedule revealed. The Times noted he worked just four of the first 39 Fridays this year.

“Anyone who watches what I’m doing understands that every hour, every day, including weekends, I’m focused on this work, which is why we’re getting done what we are getting done,” de Blasio said.

He remains unconcerned about criticism that he spends too much time on national matters.

De Blasio has been critical of President Donald Trump, saying he has created an “atmosphere of hatred and division” in the United States.

But those in City Hall rather he turn his attention to New York City.

“People feel distracted by his interest in focusing on the other stuff, the political stuff,” one unnamed city official told the Times. “It’s distracting to those trying to get the work of government done.”

But the newspaper does point out de Blasio has been busy outside City Hall. There have been 2,000 scheduled activities annually, including meetings, phone calls, speeches, parades, policy announcements and travel.
