New York City Mayor and Democratic presidential candidate Bill de Blasio ripped President Donald Trump on Friday morning, calling him a "con man" and a "trickster" who posted a "low energy" video attacking his presidential aspirations.

"So what's happened the last 24 hours? Certainly, Rupert Murdoch's New York Post has been attacking me, and con Don himself, Donald Trump, not only tweeted at me, he created his own video. I was very impressed," de Blasio said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

De Blasio joined the presidential race Thursday, and later that day Trump posted a short clip from Air Force One as he reacted to the news.

"And because I said con Don, here he comes and he makes his own custom video to attack me," he said. "I'm already under his skin. And you need a candidate to take him on who knows his tricks and knows how to deal with him.

"I did a counter video, by the way, you should take a look at, and I noted that his video was very low energy. I don't know if you saw that, Mika, very low energy."

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump dubbed fellow candidate and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush "low energy."

De Blasio told the "Morning Joe" panel he has seen Trump up close and personal for years during Trump's days as a Manhattan real estate developer.

"I've watched this guy for decades," de Blasio said. "He's a con man. He's a trickster. We've all watched what he's up to. And he told working people in this country in 2016 he was going on their side and he was going to be there to make their lives better. He conned everyone."

There are now more than two dozen Democrats vying for the presidential nomination, but all of them trail former Vice President Joe Biden by a significant margin. In second, at least according to most polls, is Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.
