Former President Bill Clinton believes if special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation was being conducted with a Democratic president in the White House, “impeachment hearings would have begun already.”

In an interview with Mo Rocca aired on “CBS Sunday Morning,” Clinton said the press has mostly tried to be fair to President Donald Trump.

"I think they have tried by and large to cover this investigation [by special counsel Robert Mueller] based on the facts," Clinton said. "I think if the roles were reversed — now, this is me just talking, but it's based on my experience — I think if it were a Democratic president, and these facts were present, most people I know in Washington believe impeachment hearings would have begun already."

"And most people I know believe that the press would have been that hard, or harder. But these are serious issues,” he added.

Clinton himself was impeached — and acquitted by the Senate — for lying to the public related to his affair with intern Monica Lewinsky. And he now pushes back on those who say he should have stepped down because of the affair, including Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y.

"I just disagree with her," he said. "I mean, you have to really ignore what the context was. But you know, she's living in a different context. And she did it for different reasons. So, I just disagree with her."

Clinton also related a story of how President Donald Trump’s insults against his wife Hillary Clinton during her failed presidential run were both disturbing — and revealing.

"There's a Trump supporter here in town that I walked past his house with my dogs,” he said. “He had a 'Lock her up' poster in his front window. And I said to him, 'If you're gonna do that to my wife, you make sure the prisons are comfortable, 'cause you're gonna have a lot of company of your supporters in there.’ And you know what he said? [Former President Barack] Obama and Hillary started the second Civil War.'

"So, there's division. But underneath that, there's a core of fundamental decency that can be really skewed when people feel abused, left out, or looked down on."
