Self-proclaimed socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders' "Medicare for All" proposal could levy a whopping $16.2 trillion in new taxes over the next 10 years -- but even that sky-high sum would only pay for about half the cost of the program.

That estimate comes courtesy of Americans for Tax Reform (ATR), the conservative taxpayer advocacy group. ATR estimates the total price tag of Sanders' plan would come in at between $32-36 trillion over 10 years.
