Politico: 3 Candidates Being Considered for Attorney General

As the White House considers a replacement for Attorney General Eric Holder following his resignation last week, insiders believe just three candidates are being actively considered.

According to Politico, the top three contenders are former White House Counsel Kathy Ruemmler, Labor Secretary Tom Perez, and Solicitor General Donald Verrilli.

"The decision will signify what President Barack Obama wants his attorney general to prioritize — and what he wants his own legal legacy to be — for the remainder of the administration. In the midst of the president stepping up America's military approach to terrorism, national security considerations will be central to the nomination," Politico said.

The ability of a candidate to take forward key elements of the president's domestic agenda will also be a top consideration, according to Politico, which would include defending possible executive actions on immigration, restoring the Voting Rights Act, and overcoming legal challenges to Obamacare.

Officials say Ruemmler, who left the White House in May
, is best placed to help the administration handle unfinished business, such as reforms to sentencing and the closure of Guantanamo Bay, given she has been involved in the issues for a number of years.

"The national security piece of the job over the last 13 years has become a huge and significant part of the job. Clearly, that's part of the potential strength Kathy brings to this," a former White House official told Politico.

Perez could be selected if the president wants to emphasize civil rights issues while shoring up Obama's political base.

"Speaking from the civil rights perspective, Holder fulfilled all our ideas and thoughts of what a good attorney general should be about," Marc Morial, CEO of the National Urban League, told Politico, though not specifically mentioning Perez. "We want an attorney general who's going to continue that commitment."

Meanwhile, it is thought Verilli would provide strong leadership and authority to the Justice Department, Politico said, and could be favored by Obama who is also a constitutional lawyer and may be like-minded.

"He has incredible stature in the legal community," a former official from the Justice Department told Politico.

Several other candidates could also still be in the running. Jenny Durkan, former U.S. attorney in Washington State, may be considered, as could Preet Bharara, U.S. attorney in New York who has a strong reputation for pursing financial crimes and political corruption.
