Iran's supreme leader revealed the existence of a letter President Donald Trump allegedly sent to America's allies in the Middle East in which he asked for more help in keeping the region safe.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei tweeted about the letter Wednesday:
According to The Washington Post, Khamenei also talked about the letter during a speech at Farhangian University in Tehran.
"A couple of days ago, Trump wrote a letter to the leaders of the Arab world," Khamenei said, according to the Post. "We have that letter. In the letter, he says I have spent $7 trillion on you, you have to do [what I say]. You spent this money to rule over Iraq and Syria. You couldn't. To hell with it. He says you should do it and says Iran 'should' do it, too."
The Post cited a senior administration official as confirming the letter was sent roughly two weeks ago to America's allies in the Middle East. It's unclear how Iran, which is not a U.S. ally, got ahold of it.
Trump has referenced the amount of money the U.S. has spent in the Middle East in the past. He has expressed a desire to withdraw many American troops from the region and have an Arab security force pitch in to help keep the volatile area safe.
Trump announced Tuesday that he is withdrawing the U.S. from the Iran nuclear deal, an agreement signed in 2015 to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Critics of the deal say it does not do enough to stop Iran's nuclear program.
