United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a "red alert" for the international community in a message on Sunday, saying that in "fundamental ways the world has gone in reverse" since his January 2017 appeal for peace.

"Conflicts have deepened and new dangers have emerged," he warned, adding that "global anxieties about nuclear weapons are the highest since the Cold War."

The secretary-general also cited as concerns the rising danger of climate change, a growth in inequalities, horrific violations of human rights and increased nationalism and xenophobia.

Guterres stressed that unity is the only answer to solving the world's problems and urged leaders "everywhere to make this New Year's resolution: narrow the gaps. Bridge the divides. Rebuild trust by bringing people together around common goals."
