If President Donald Trump had asked former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney to run his State Department, the former Republican presidential candidate would have accepted, according to his wife Ann.
"I thought Mitt would have been terrific, and we were very seriously considering it," she said in an interview on NBC's "Today" show.
"I think he was very seriously being considered. And so for Mitt to have been able to shape foreign affairs, I think would have been a very significant role for him and I know he would have accepted it if he had been asked."
Romney, who denounced Trump as a "con man, a phony, and a fraud" during the 2016 presidential campaign, according to Time Magazine, was nevertheless one of the highest-profile suggestions for the position during the transition phase. Ann Romney hit back against the suggestion that Trump was merely leading her husband on.
"It was very serious," she said. "I don't ever for a moment think that was the case."
After former Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson was announced as Trump's nominee for secretary of state, Romney said it was an "honor to have been considered," and that his discussions with Trump have been both enjoyable and enlightening," in a Facebook post.
"I have very high hopes that the new administration will lead the nation to great strength, prosperity and peace," he added.
