Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi could be freed from a Mexico jail within the next two weeks, putting an end to his six-month imprisonment, Rep. Matt Salmon told MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

Salmon, chairman of the House Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, held a hearing on Wednesday about the issue, with testimony presented by the Marine Sgt.'s mother, Jill Tahmooressi, and celebrity and veteran Montel Williams.

"Right after the hearing, the ambassador from Mexico called me, and I think it was a very positive conversation. And, my expectation is within the next couple of weeks he'll be freed," the Arizona Republican said Thursday.

Tahmooressi has been imprisoned in Mexico since his arrest in March after he crossed the border with weapons in his vehicle that were legally registered in the U.S. Tahmooressi, who served two tours of duty in Afghanistan and reportedly suffers from PTSD, said he crossed the border by accident.

Salmon said he had been working with State Department officials about the matter for several months, and held the hearing on Wednesday to call attention to Tahmooressi's plight, because those working to free him had been "jerked around for several months."

"It's way past time to get this young man out of prison. And, I wanted to shed some light on it," he said.

On the threat to the United States by the Islamic State (ISIS), Salmon said Congress should debate a new Authorization for Use of Military Force regarding action against the terrorist organization.

"I think we need to debate a full-throated Authorization of Force," he said. "I think it should be as expeditious as possible."

Salmon said he anticipated U.S. combat troops would "start going into Syria" after November's midterm elections, and maintained there needed to be "all options on the table" if the U.S. was going to defeat ISIS.
