Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe Tuesday dismissed President Donald Trump's accusations on Twitter that he'd committed illegal and treasonous acts, saying that nobody takes the president's tweets "very seriously," but later in the interview called Trump's taunts "horrific."

"I don't think really anybody takes those tweets by the president very seriously," McCabe told NBC's "Today" anchor Savannah Guthrie. "He's been attacking me and my family and lying about us for two years now. It's just really more of the same."

Later in the interview, however, he said Trump's attacks were "incredibly tough on my family,"

"My wife who is a wonderful person, a pediatric emergency room physician, tried to help her community by running for office, and then to stand up there in front of thousands of people and perpetuate lies and slander about my wife and our family has been horrific," said McCabe, who writes in his new book that Trump called his wife Jill a "loser."

McCabe told Guthrie that there was no connection between his wife's political activities and the decisions he made while investigating Clinton, and that "that's been borne out by an in-depth investigation."

The president afterward denied McCabe's claims.

"I never said anything bad about Andrew McCabe’s wife other than she (they) should not have taken large amounts of campaign money from a Crooked Hillary source when Clinton was under investigation by the FBI," Trump tweeted. "I never called his wife a loser to him (another McCabe made up lie)!"
