At least three people have backed away from directing Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s potential presidential bid – in part because of claims she mistreats staffers, the HuffPost is reporting.
The website provided no further details about the three or what they cited specifically in withdrawing from consideration.
Klobuchar, A Minnesota Democrat, has scheduled a Sunday announcement about whether she will run for president in 2020.
But the HuffPost noted some former staffers complain she is demeaning and prone to bursts of cruelty.
Two ex-staffers told the website Klobuchar regularly sends emails describing aides’ work on briefings or on press releases as “the worst.” She sends copies of the critical emails to other staffers in her office, as well.
One person, who had been up for a position in her office, said he was told that avoiding Klobuchar’s anger was a key part of the job. Three of those interviewed by the HuffPost said some staffers were tasked by Klobuchar to perform personal errands, including washing dishes at her home or picking up her dry cleaning.
But others came to the defense of Klobuchar
“Senator Klobuchar loves her staff ― they are the reason she has gotten to where she is today,” a campaign spokesperson told the HuffPost. “
And Tristan Brown, a former legislative aide, said: “I’ve heard people say she’s tough to work for and I sometimes cringe when I hear it because I rarely hear that said about male bosses in Congress despite the fact that half of Congress is tough to work for.”
