Ammon Bundy has criticized President Donald Trump for his negative portrayal of the migrant caravan currently in Tijuana, The Washington Post reported on Wednesday.
In a 17-minute video on Facebook, Bundy said Trump “has basically called them all criminals and said they’re not coming in here. It seems that there’s been this group stereotype. But what about those who have come here for reasons of need. . . and are willing to go through the process to apply for asylum so they can come into this country?"
Due to his long-standing land dispute with federal authorities that sparked an armed standoff in Nevada in 2014, Bundy has been one of the symbols of the anti-Washington energy that helped send Trump to the White House.
Bundy’s criticism of the president may be a sign that Trump’s border policy is not completely in line with those who are usually receptive to his messaging, according to the Post.
Speaking of the anti-migrant rhetoric, Bundy said, “It’s all fear-based, and frankly it’s based upon selfishness - ‘I’m going to lose something by them coming in.' I think that’s incorrect.”
Bundy said he did his own research on the migrant issue, because both the conservative and liberal media distort the truth.
Although he acknowledged some of the migrants “act like criminals,” he insisted most are fleeing violence and have "a legal right to apply to come into this country. Each one of them should be considered individually.”
Bundy added that he has been "surprised, disappointed and even at times disgusted [by] the amount of people who profess to be Christians but will not truly adhere to what Christ said.”
