President Donald Trump has to "swallow his pride" and write a new executive order to keep the nation's border safe rather than fight a federal court halt of his travel ban on seven Muslim-majority countries, Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz said Thursday night.
In an interview on MSNBC's "For The Record" with host Greta Van Susteren, Dershowitz called Trump's travel ban "a failure of presidential leadership, tragically."
"Trump did this unilaterally, without thinking hard about what courts would say," he added.
Now the president needs to go back to the drawing board – and quickly.
"The border is not safe if the [executive] order is stayed," Dershowitz said. "If [Trump] wants to keep the border, he needs a new order. He cannot accept a stay which may last for months and keeps the border open."
"He has to come up with something new, he has to swallow his pride and do it," Dershowitz urged.
