The Air Force has launched an investigation into how one of its jets accidentally fired a rocket into the desert between Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, NBC News is reporting.

The jet, an A-10C Thunderbolt II, known as the Warthog, “unintentionally released a single M-156 rocket” Thursday morning while on a training mission, the network news quoted the Air Force as saying.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The missile was fired about 60 miles northeast of Tucson in an uninhabited training area.

"This training area is not designated for munitions release," the Air Force said.
