Ahmad Khan Rahimi, the man convicted of the 2016 bombing in New York's Chelsea neighborhood, has been trying to radicalize fellow inmates, according to prosecutors.

Rahimi has been passing out terrorist propaganda and jihadist materials and "has been attempting to radicalize fellow inmates in the Metropolitan Correction Center," Acting U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim wrote in a letter to U.S. District Judge Richard Berman, CNN reported Sunday.

One of those inmates is Sajmir Alimehmeti, who is scheduled to go on trial next month on charges of terrorism in an incident unrelated to the Chelsea bombing, prosecutors said.

Rahimi reportedly began distributing the materials in October or earlier. He was convicted Oct. 16 on eight charges connected to the Chelsea bombing and is scheduled to be sentenced in mid-January of next year.

He faces a mandatory life sentence in prison, Kim said in a statement. Rahimi faces separate charges for a bombing in Seaside Park, New Jersey, and a shootout with police before he was taken into custody.

Rahimi also sent a handwritten letter to Berman stating he began a hunger strike on December 8 to protest that his wife and children have not been able to visit him since the end of his trial.
