ADL: Antisemitic Incidents Almost Quadrupled Since Oct. 7

By    |   Wednesday, 10 January 2024 12:13 PM EST

The number of antisemitic incidents in the U.S. has nearly quadrupled since the Hamas terrorists' Oct. 7 attack on Israel, according to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).

New ADL data shows a total of 3,283 anti-Jewish incidents between Oct. 7 and Jan. 7. That's a 360% increase compared to the same period in 2022-23.

The preliminary data found an average of nearly 34 antisemitic incidents daily after the Oct. 7 assault, putting 2023 on course to be the highest year for antisemitic incidents since the ADL began keeping statistics in the late 1970s, the organization said.

"We have provided research, analysis and data to keep you informed of the severity of this issue," ADL said on its website. "As we advocate for legislation, actions from the media, workplaces, campus administration and tech platforms and provide resources for schools, we urge you to join us and explore the ways you can get involved."

The preliminary three-month data, first reported by NBC News, found the highest number of antisemitic incidents recorded in any full year, except 2022, during the last decade.

There were 3,697 antisemitic incidents recorded in 2022.

"The American Jewish community is facing a threat level that's now unprecedented in modern history," ADL CEO and National Director Jonathan Greenblatt said, NBC News reported.

"It's shocking that we've recorded more antisemitic acts in three months than we usually would in an entire year."

The ADL broke down incidents into four categories. The first three included physical assault (60 incidents), vandalism (553), and verbal or written harassment (1,353).

The fourth category encompasses "1,137 rallies, including antisemitic rhetoric, expressions of support for terrorism against the state of Israel and/or anti-Zionism," NBC News reported.

At least 505 of the total incidents during the three-month period occurred on college campuses, with another 246 reported in K-12 schools, according to the ADL.

At least 628 incidents were reported against Jewish institutions, such as synagogues, and roughly two-thirds of the total "could be directly related to the Israel-Hamas war," NBC News reported.

Greenblatt wrote a Dec. 21 open letter to college presidents.

"Universities have by and large been derelict in their duty to protect Jewish communities on campus, in many cases raising serious concern under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act," Greenblatt wrote.

"Simply put, to date, there have been too few consequences — that must change."
