The
450 additional American trainers President Barack Obama announced he is sending to Iraq won't have enough effect, and the president should instead worry about developing a war strategy, Rep. Adam Kinzinger told Fox News Channel.
Appearing Wednesday on
"On the Record with Greta Van Susteren," Kinzinger called the troops "a good start," but added that Obama "is going to need to stand up and say here is going to be the strategy that's going to wipe [the Islamic State or ISIS] out."
Obama on Monday said
the Pentagon does not yet have a complete strategy to deal with ISIS, sparking criticism from Republicans.
Kinzinger, an Illinois Republican who was an Air Force pilot serving in both Afghanistan and Iraq, said there should be more special forces and embedded troops with the Iraqi military.
Training of the Iraqi officer corps is needed, too, he said, to prevent them from retreating from battle as they have in the past.
Kinzinger said Obama appears to just be managing Iraq while he runs out the clock on his presidency.
"I think he really doesn't want to be the guy that starts Iraq III in his mind, and so he is trying to manage it and he hopes the next person can come in and do it," Kinzinger said.
