The American Civil Liberties Union took a swipe Wednesday at President Donald Trump saying that he was seriously considering ending birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. to noncitizens and illegal immigrants.
"That is very seriously not how any of this works," the ACLU said in a tweet that included a post from Vox reporter Aaron Rupar on Trump's remarks.
"We're looking at that very seriously, birthright citizenship," Trump told reporters outside the White House, "where you have a baby on our land, you walk over the border, have a baby — congratulations, the baby is now a U.S. citizen.
"It's frankly ridiculous," the president said.
Trump told Axios in October that he would end "birthright citizenship" through executive order, however experts say the move would violate the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
The amendment, adopted in 1868 after the Civil War to ensure that African Americans had full citizenship rights, granted citizenship to "all persons born or naturalized in the United States."
It has generally been interpreted to grant citizenship to most people born in the United States, whether or not their parents are American citizens or are legally living in the United States.
