Abraham Lincoln's fountain pen sold for $41,250 at auction, according to the Washington Examiner.

The pen, decorated with a gold-colored star pattern, was sold Thursday by Nate D. Sanders Auctions. The auction house had required a $30,000 opening bid, according to the Examiner.

Lincoln had received the 7.25" long pen during his presidency, the website said. His grandniece, Mary Edwards Brown, later inherited it.
