Study: Abortions Spike in States Near Those With Bans

By    |   Thursday, 07 September 2023 10:40 AM EDT

Colorado saw an 89% increase in abortions since 2020, one of several states that experienced major spikes as a result of neighboring states banning abortion after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year, according to new analysis from the Guttmacher Institute.

With about a quarter of states having banned or severely restricted abortions, the study shows that women are border-hopping to states with protections.

Colorado had an increase of nearly 6,000 abortions over a three-year period as a result of Nebraska, Wyoming, and Utah enacting strict measures. Nebraska outlaws abortion after 12 weeks of pregnancy.

South Carolina had a jump of 124% of abortions since 2020, but the state just last month implemented a ban on abortions after six weeks.

Illinois saw a surge of 69%, an increase of 18,300 abortions. Illinois border states Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Kentucky either have made abortion illegal or imposed strict limitations.

New Mexico, California, Washington state, New York, and Florida saw spikes in abortions over the three-year period.

About 25 states and Washington, D.C., have measures in place to protect access to abortions, many of those by executive order. Seventeen of those saw spikes since 2020, according to Guttmacher, which describes itself as a policy and research organization "committed to advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights worldwide."

According to Guttmacher, 14 states that have either banned abortion or otherwise prevented providers from performing abortions accounted for more than 113,000 abortions in 2020, roughly 12% of all abortions that year.

The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022.
