Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes declared that state law precludes Sen. Rand Paul from running for both president and re-election to the U.S. Senate at the same time,
Politico reported.
She told
WHAS-TV in Louisville that the law was clear. "You can't be on the ballot twice for two offices."
She said, "We'll look to the court for any guidance that is needed," adding, "At the end of the day, we're not going to be bullied," Politico reported.
Lundergan Grimes, a Democrat, was defeated in November in her own electoral bid to displace incumbent Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell.
Grimes said she has yet to decide whether to run for a second term as secretary of state in 2015. If she doesn't get re-elected, she'd have little leverage in legally confronting Paul on any dual candidacy, according to Politico.
"I haven't made any determination as to what the next step is going to be," Grimes said.
She could be a candidate against Paul for the Senate or make a bid for the governor's mansion.
She told WHAS-TV, "I'm taking time to reflect with family and friends on what has been an amazing journey."
