Pat Caddell: NSA Scandal Causing Crack in Democrats' Support for Obama

By    |   Monday, 19 Aug 2013 05:48 PM

As the National Security Agency scandal gets deeper, Democratic pollster Pat Caddell says his party's support for President Barack Obama is beginning to crack.

Democratic Sens. Mark Udall and Ron Wyden warned in a letter Friday that the 2,776 violations of privacy by NSA employees are just the "tip of a larger iceberg." Word of the violations were one of the latest leaks by former NSA contract employee Edward Snowden.

As the story unfolds, some Democrats are "finally remembering what they believe in," Caddell said Monday on Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto."

Caddell worked for former President Jimmy Carter, and said what he is seeing now reminds him of when Carter's fellow Democrats finally turned against him in the late 1970s.

"For now almost five years the bulk of the Democratic Party has suppressed its own belief in its own values to 'We have to be for Obama, we have to roll over and play dead,'" Caddell said. "Young people who are a part of his base are saying no thank you on this."

The country has already decided overwhelmingly, except for those people in the National Security Administration, that they oppose the NSA gathering communications records of Americans as part of the war on terrorism, Caddell said. "This is a new paradigm."

Despite the White House, some Democrats and some Republicans, including a few of Caddell's fellow Fox News contributors, support for the NSA programs, Obama has lost the issue, he said.

He called the president either "clueless or disingenuous" in continuing to support the NSA. The issued might hurt not only Obama, who doesn't have to run for re-election, but also Democrats running in the 2014 midterms or presidential hopefuls such as Hillary Clinton or Vice President Joe Biden.

"For the Democrats, it's the first real crack in that solidarity," he said.
