The most drawn-out House race in 2020 is over — maybe.
With the court-ordered counting and recounting of disputed ballots in New York’s 22nd District (Utica) completed Wednesday, the final count showed former Republican Rep. Claudia Tenney defeating Democrat Rep. Anthony Brindisi by 29 votes out of more than 325,000 cast.
The latest numbers came in after Oneida County became the eighth and last county in the district to report final figures. With all of Oneida’s votes now reporting, Tenney gained 343 votes and Brindisi 333.
A week before, the other seven counties reported figures that gave Tenney a lead of 19 votes districtwide. Trump Republican Tenney has led almost consistently since the evening of Nov. 3.
Because the courtroom of state Supreme Court Judge Scott DelConte won’t reopen until Jan. 4, Tenney will not be able to be certified and sworn in with the rest of the 117th Congress on Jan. 3.
Once he reconvenes his court next week and faces attorneys for Tenney and Brindisi, DelConte will determine which of the ballots disputed by both sides are viable or not. He is then expected to order certification of the winner.
