In a move that left observers on both sides in New York’s 11th District (Staten Island) speechless, freshman Democratic Rep. Max Rose switched Wednesday from opposing to supporting the House inquiry into the impeachment of President Donald Trump.
In becoming one of the eight Democratic “holdouts” in the House to finally support impeachment, Rose is inarguably imperiled himself further as he seeks re-election in a district Trump swept with 55 percent of the vote in ’16.
Rose, who narrowly upset GOP Rep. Dan Donovan last year, is now likely to face a Republican considered one of her party’s hottest prospects to regain a lost seat: State Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, who is expected to carry the ballot lines of both the Republican and Conservative Parties.
“Congressman Rose in supporting impeachment of President Trump both angered and energized the large Trump voting bloc in this Trump ‘Plus Ten’ district,” New York State Conservative Party Chairman Gerard Kassar told Newsmax.
Kassar added that Malliotakis “is sure to benefit from strong Trump/Pence support in this highly competitive race.”
Rose’s “switcheroo” is quite dramatic in the short time frame he took to change his mind. In early September, he published an op-ed in the Staten Island Advance entitled “Why I Oppose Trump Impeachment.”
At an overflow town meeting last Wednesday, Rose announced that he now supports the impeachment inquiry.
“The President of the United States may be willing to violate the Constitution to get re-e lected,” he added. “I will not.”
