The results of the latest poll on Montana’s at-large U.S. House District left many Republican jaws agape throughout the Big Sky Country.
According to the RMG Poll released over the weekend, Democrat Kathleen Williams and Republican Matt Rosendale were tied at 47 percent each.
Only a week ago, most Montana Repubicans felt “cautiously optimistic” that State Auditor and 2018 Republican U.S. Senate nominee Rosendale would keep the seat relinquished by Rep. Greg Gianforte to run for governor.
A Montana State University poll at the time showed Rosendale with a 48 to 46 percent edge over former State Rep. Williams, who drew 46.2 percent against Gianforte in ’18.
“Matt lost a primary for this seat to [former Rep. and onetime U.S. Secretary of the Interior] Ryan Zinke, and got clobbered by [Democrat Jon]Tester for the Senate after Trump campaigned here for him four times,” former Secretary of State and ’04 Republican gubernatorial nominee Bob Brown told Newsmax. “Williams is well-financed, very telegenic, and very popular with women.”
“But,” Brown added, “Matt has been able to bring in the heavy artillery with TV and postcards lately. Given Montana’s Republican history, I’d bet on him.”
