In news Wednesday that stunned Republicans from Orange County to Washington DC, Democrat Katie Porter suddenly moved ahead of Republican Rep. Mimi Walters as the counting of absentee ballots in California’s 45th District continued.
Two-termer Walters had led on election night and has maintained a lead of 1000-2000 votes as the count continued.
Porter, a University of California law professor and protégé of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D.-Mass., jumped ahead by 261 votes. It was the first time Porter held the lead over Walters.
Roughly 80,000 votes throughout Orange County remain to be counted, but these votes are spread throughout three congressional districts. It is unclear just how many will come from the 45th District.
In the other two Orange County districts, Democrat Harley Rouda has been called the winner over Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher in the 48th District and, in the 39th District, Democrat Gil Cisneros and Republican Young Kim are locked in a too-close-to-call battle for the seat of retiring Republican Rep. Ed Royce.
