Five days after it was reported exclusively in Newsmax, the Office of the president-elect made it official Saturday: Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will be sworn in to office Tuesday by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
Along with the history-making side of the Sotomayor announcement — she will be the first Latina to participate in the inaugural ceremony — Harris' own strong admiration for the justice was a key reason for her doing the honors Jan. 20.
Writing on Twitter in 2019, the 10th anniversary of the justice's appointment by President Barack Obama, Sen. Harris, D-Calif., noted: "Sonia Sotomayor has fought for the voices of the people ever since her first case voting against corporations in Citizens United. As a critical voice on the bench, she's showing all our children what's possible."
The announcement of Sotomayor swearing in the incoming vice president comes as the Obama-appointed jurist joined with fellow Justice Stephen Breyer on Friday in denouncing President Donald Trump for executing its 13th federal prisoner days before he leaves office.
Of the execution of convicted murderer Dustin John Higgs by lethal injection Friday in Terre Haute, Indiana, Sotomayor wrote "this is not justice" and denounced what she called "an unprecedented rush" to execute death row inmates.
