With all signs pointing to a landslide sweep of Oklahoma by President Donald Trump and Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe, freshman Democrat Rep. Kendra Horn nonetheless clings to a small lead in the historically Republican 5th District (Oklahoma City).
According to a just-completed poll from independent firm SoonerPoll, Horn leads conservative Republican and state Sen. Stephanie Bice 49% to 47% among likely voters statewide.
Days before, SoonerPoll surveys showed Trump and Inhofe both winning 59% of the vote statewide.
Since winning an upset over Republican Rep. Steve Russell in 2018, Horn has characterized herself as a centrist Democrat and joined the Blue Dog Coalition of House Democrats who do not consider themselves liberal.
She did, however, vote for Nancy Pelosi as speaker of the House — a vote for which the Bice team continually slams her.
"And she voted for that impeachment [of Trump] nonsense, which Oklahomans wanted no part of," Rep. Tom Cole of the Sooner State's 4th District told Newsmax. "And that's going to be a major issue in the 5th District."
Bice, a small businesswoman, won a heated nomination battle and runoff election for the nomination to face Horn.
The district first became Republican in 1974 when Democrat Rep. John Jarman announced he was switching parties. Two years later, Jarman retired and conservative stalwart Mickey Edwards won the seat. The 5th District remained firmly in the GOP's grip until Horn's election two years ago.
