Although many conservatives applauded the president's choice of John Bolton as national security adviser, others on the right who had backed Donald Trump because of his call for a non-interventionist foreign policy are calling the Bolton appointment nothing short of a betrayal.
"John Bolton has championed and defended all the bloody and bankrupting wars of the George W. Bush era," syndicated columnist and onetime Republican presidential candidate Pat Buchanan told Newsmax. "He dvocates new wars on Iran and North Korea that would be disastrous for the nation."
Buchanan added that there was "no way you can reconcile this appointment with the kind of foreign policy Donald Trump promised."
Former Texas Republican Chairman and Reagan administration official Tom Pauken was even stronger in his criticism of former U.N. ambassador Bolton. In his words, "Bolton is a warhawk who ducked military service in Vietnam, but has constantly pushed for U.S. military action abroad."
Perhaps the toughest language of all about Bolton came from Students for Liberty, a group that champions the libertarian viewpoint on college campuses. Dr. Wolf von Laer, CEO of Students for Liberty, called Bolton a "dangerous pick for National Security Advisor" and called his support of interventionism "the definition of insanity."
"President Trump campaigned on ending regime change, so his decision to pick the champion of regime change, Bolton, doesn't make sense," said von Laer. "Bolton has called for war with North Korea and Iran and has expressed support for the extrajudicial killing of American citizens, all potentially devastating policies."
Von Laer warned that "America should be wary of someone so eager to put lives on the line through policies that are counterproductive for the security of the United States of America."
