Four days after the whole world watched an assailant stab front-running Brazilian presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro at a televised rally, the White House said Tuesday members of the administration have reached out to the wounded contender.
Asked by Newsmax whether President Trump had called Bolsonaro or his family to wish a speedy recovery, White House spokesman Sarah Sanders replied she was "not aware that the president has [called the Bolsonaro family]."
"But I do believe that members of the administration have reached out," she added. "I will work to get you the specifics."
A former Army captain and congressman, Bolsonaro, 63, has been called the "Tropical Trump' by several pundits for his tough language and call for more law and order measures to deal with crime and terrorism.
Virtually all polls have shown him the front-runner in a crowded presidential race Oct. 7. Should no candidate win a majority, a run-off will be held between the top two vote-getters Oct. 28.
Doctors say Bolsonaro lost nearly 40 percent of his blood following the stabbing last Thursday, but he is now listed in stable condition. The candidate has also begun to talk to reporters from his hospital bed.
