In what was clearly heartening news to Democrats in Florida and nationwide, two just-completed polls of the hard-fought Senate race in the Sunshine State give a slight advantage to Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., over Gov. Rick Scott, a two-term governor and Republican nominee.

A St. Petes Poll released Tuesday showed three-termer Nelson edging Scott by 49.3-48.4 percent. The margin of error was plus or minus 2.0 percentage points.

The results of this poll are nearly identical to those of a Trafalgar Strategy survey also released Tuesday. Trafalgar had Nelson beating Scott by 49.20-47.4 percent.

At least one expert who spoke to Newsmax was unimpressed with the results.

"Most polls still show Gov. Scott within striking distance, just as most polls had Scott slightly losing in his successful re-election bid in 2014," Jay O'Callaghan, a much-respected polling analyst and former legislative director to Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., told Newsmax.

He added: "Republicans still lead by 2 percent in the absentee and early vote, which they lost in 2016 but won in 2014. In the past, Republicans have always won the Election Day vote."
