GOP Conservatives Balk at Stopgap Spending Bill

Monday, 14 March 2011 03:33 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) — One of the top conservatives in the House is opposing a measure to keep the government running for three more weeks while the White House and Republican lawmakers seek a longer-term agreement on spending cuts.

Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio chairs a group of conservative lawmakers that makes up a sizable majority of House Republicans.

Jordan says the measure should include a ban on federal funding for Planned Parenthood and that Congress needs to do better than cutting spending in small, bite-size pieces. His opposition reflects widespread unhappiness with the must-pass legislation.

The House votes Tuesday on a measure cutting $6 billion as the price for keeping the government open until April 8. Democrats and Republicans remain deadlocked over legislation funding day-to-day agency operations.
