Gingrich Says GOP Has Chance at Historic Win

Saturday, 26 March 2011 11:32 AM EDT

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says Republicans have a chance to score a historic victory in next year's presidential election.

Gingrich was the second of four potential presidential candidates to speak Saturday at a gathering of conservative Republicans in Iowa.

The former House Speaker says there's a huge difference between the views being pushed by President Barack Obama and those of mainstream Americans. Gingrich says America is a center-right country, but Obama is governing from the left.

The former House speaker joined Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour in arguing that Obama's health care overhaul stands out among what he described as Obama's failed policies.

Saturday's Conservative Principles Conference is organized by U.S. Rep. Steve King, a conservative Republican from western Iowa.
