Poll: Voters Support Spending Cuts Over Taxes

It’s not just budget experts who are worried about the explosion of the federal government’s budget deficit and debt burden. Average Americans are concerned about it too, according to a new poll from The Hill.

The survey shows that 95 percent of likely voters think cutting the debt is either very or somewhat important, while only 2 percent see the issue as not at all or not very important.

Voters also support spending cuts over tax increases to shrink the $14 trillion debt, just like Republicans in Congress. A plurality of 42 percent say any tax reform plan should cut taxes and generate less revenue. Only 29 percent say tax reform should create extra revenue to reduce the budget deficit. And 19 percent say tax reform should be revenue neutral.
