Republican Govs See No Kinship With Obama

By    |   Tuesday, 01 March 2011 03:06 PM EST

President Barack Obama needs support anywhere he can get it. But it wasn’t coming from the Republican governors he met with in a closed door session at the White House Tuesday, Politico reports.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley told Obama he should try to push the lawsuits challenging healthcare reform on a fast track to the Supreme Court, according to someone present. But the president wouldn’t agree, saying he’d prefer the suits go through the usual protracted process.

Obama also showed no support for Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour’s idea to lighten Medicaid burdens on states with many poor people.

While the conversations were polite, they show Obama will have trouble finding common ground with the 29 Republican governors.
