The Pulitzer Prize Board will consider The National Enquirer as a prize candidate for revealing the John Edwards sex scandal, informed sources told The Huffington Post.
That means the board has accepted the tabloid as a competitor to mainstream news providers like The New York Times.
"We're excited to be officially part of the Pulitzer competition," The Enquirer’s Executive Editor Barry Levine told The Post. "We know we'll be judged against other very outstanding submissions, but our work on Edwards is truly worthy of the prize."
The Enquirer broke the news that the former Democratic presidential candidate had an affair and fathered a child with campaign staffer Rielle Hunter. For months Edwards denied both the affair and fathering the child.
The tabloid also was in front reporting on Edwards’ cover-up and the investigation into whether he misused campaign funds to pay off Hunter. A North Carolina grand jury will likely announce in the next few months if it will indict Edwards.
The Enquirer recently wrote that he and Hunter are now engaged and living together in a $3.5 million beach house Edwards bought.
The tabloid’s stories are being considered in two Pulitzer categories: investigative reporting and national news reporting.
Initially, prize administrator Sig Gissler tried to keep the tabloid out of the running, saying it’s ineligible thanks to several technicalities.
The Enquirer also helped break the Tiger Woods sex scandal, reporting just before his Thanksgiving traffic accident that he was having an affair with a New York City nightclub manager.
