WikiLeaks: Podesta Advocated Early 'Dump' of All Emails

Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman John Podesta advocated for a quick release of the Democratic presidential candidate's emails as soon as news broke of her use of a private server while she was secretary of state, according to a new batch of the Podesta's hacked emails released by WikiLeaks.

"Not to sound like Lanny, but we are going to have to dump all those emails so better to do so sooner than later," Podesta wrote to top Clinton aide Cheryl Mills on March 2, 2015.

"Think you just got your new nick name," Mills wrote back.

Fox News Channel's Ed Henry reported Tuesday that the Clinton campaign says Podesta meant by the term "dump" that they should be dumped out for everyone to see, as in a document dump, and not "dump" as in deleted, as many of Clinton's critics have been charging on Twitter.

The reference to "Lanny" is believed to be Lanny Davis, a longtime Clinton ally, who served as President Bill Clinton's special counsel. Davis has long been an advocate of releasing potentially damning information early in hopes the public will have largely forgotten about it by the time they enter the voting booth.

The New York Post notes that Clinton tweeted about the emails two days later, on March 4, 2015. She asked the State Department to make public the 55,000 pages of work-related emails, saying, "want the public to see my email."

She also addressed the issue publicly a week later, on March 10, 2015, saying she had deleted about 30,000 emails that were personal, but that she had turned over all work-related emails and that no classified information was sent or received over the server.

Davis himself was also advocating for Clinton to release her emails, the Post notes, but Podesta's hacked emails show the campaign was not happy about it.

"We gotta zap Lanny out of our universe," campaign manager Robby Mook wrote to Podesta March 8, 2015. "Can't believe he committed her to a private review of her hard drive on TV."
