Wasserman Schultz: Obama Has Israel’s Back

By    |   Tuesday, 23 October 2012 08:34 AM EDT

Barack Obama’s comments on Israel in the final presidential debate shows he “has Israel’s back,” Democratic National Committee chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz tells Newsmax.TV.

Wasserman Schultz was commenting on Monday night’s exchange between the president and Republican challenger Mitt Romney that came amid charges that Obama’s policies have failed in the Middle East and have harmed America’s relationship with Israel.

The Florida congresswoman rejected those charges.

“President Obama in word and deed has demonstrated that he has Israel’s back, that he understands that the US/Israel relationship is incredible and strong and that he has made sure that as president, Israel has had no greater friend and we have the greatest military and security cooperation that we’ve ever had,” she said.

Wasserman Schultz, repeating a line of attack from Obama during the debate, said that when the president visited Israel as a candidate four years ago he visited a Holocaust museum and met with families who were victims of rocket attack launched from Gaza.

“And when Mitt Romney went to Israel as a candidate, he held two fundraisers and went home,” she added.

Wasserman Schultz asserted that “Obama really made clear how important foreign policy is to our economy because our relationships diplomatically were in tatters at the end of the last administration.

“President Obama talked about how we were able to rebuild those relationships, restore our alliances, reestablish America’s leadership on the world stage."

She said the president's foreign policies have allowed the United States to "rebuild our economy from the middle class out and focus on nation building here at home because we’ve ended the war in Iraq and we’re winding down our involvement in Afghanistan."
