Donald Trump, the leading Republican in the race for president, said Tuesday terrorism is "totally winning" in the wake of the Belgium attacks that killed at least 30 people and wounded more than 200.
Trump made the remark during an interview with
Breitbart News.
"The terrorists are totally winning," Trump said. "The terrorists are making us look like fools."
Trump has said several times on the campaign trail and during debates that the United States "doesn't win anymore," a line he's used to talk about several topics.
Trump told Breitbart the U.S. has to shut down its borders and take a good look at the immigration process.
"By not allowing the people in," Trump said. "That's how you prevent it, not allowing the people in. There has to be a moratorium. We have to find out what's going on.
"It's already probably too late because many people have been allowed into our country that we should have never, in a million years, allowed."
Two bombs were detonated at Brussels Airport Tuesday morning and another one went off at a nearby metro station. The Islamic State (ISIS) has
claimed responsibility.
Trump's rival Ted Cruz, a Texas senator who is doing all he can to beat the real estate mogul in the presidential race, said Tuesday he would like to see Muslims in America
put under surveillance.
Earlier Tuesday, Trump said
using waterboarding on terror suspects "would be fine … because we work within laws. [The terrorists] don't work within laws."
