Cruz and Wallace Spar: 'We're Going to Conduct the Debate'

Cruz and Wallace Spar: 'We're Going to Conduct the Debate'
Fox News (screen grab)

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and GOP debate moderator Chris Wallace debated between themselves over Cruz being allowed to respond to another candidate, but Wallace eventually won, telling Cruz it was time to move on.

"Chris, I was mentioned in that question," Cruz said, invoking a rule that candidates are allowed to respond when attacked.

"I don't think your name was mentioned," Wallace insisted.

"Your question said …" Cruz began.

"It's not my question you get a chance to respond to, it's his answer," Wallace responded.

"Your question was …" Cruz started again.

"You don't get 30 seconds, sir," Wallace told Cruz. "I know you like to argue about the rules, but we're going to conduct the debate."

With that, Wallace moved on to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

Later, when the moderators returned to Cruz, he said, "Chris, I would note that the last four questions have been Rand, please attack Ted, Jeb, please attack Ted … Let me just say this … gosh, if you guys ask one more mean question, I may have to leave the stage."

That last line was a jab at front-runner Donald Trump, who has skipped the debate over issues with the Fox News moderators, especially Megyn Kelly, whom he criticized after the first Fox News debate.
