One student at the Oregon community college where a gunman killed at least 10 people and wounded 7 on Tuesday said he doesn't agree with President Barack Obama's call for more gun laws.

"We know that states with the most gun laws tend to have the fewest deaths," Obama said in remarks Thursday afternoon after the shootings at Umpqua Community College.

Fox News host Bill O'Reilly challenged that assertion later on his program,"The O'Reilly Factor."

O'Reilly interviewed John Parker, a student and military veteran who was on campus studying at the vet center with other veterans when they heard about the shootings.

"A few of us got up and wanted to go check things out," Parker said, noting that he has a concealed carry permit for a pistol that he had on him at the time.

"We were told by staff to get inside, so we went to another building and got inside instead."

O'Reilly asked him what he thought of Obama's comments that states with strict gun laws have fewer shootings.

"I say look at Chicago," Parker said.

O'Reilly had said much the same thing earlier in the broadcast, pointing out that Illinois has some of the toughest gun laws in the country, yet Chicago, its largest city has seen 6,000 shootings and 1,679 murders since 2012.

"The reason is that criminals who need guns to do their business are going to get the guns because there aren't stringent penalties if you violate gun laws in Chicago or Illinois," O'Reilly said.
