Israel was the source of the classified intelligence President Donald Trump divulged to the Russians last week, The New York Times reported.
NBC News quickly followed with its own report.
Trump said he had the "absolute right" to inform the Russian delegation of the intel that revealed ISIS is plotting an attack.
White House spokesman Sean Spicer refused to comment on the reports. He also declined to say whether the White House would share transcripts of Trump's meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov with lawmakers who have asked for them.
Israel would not confirm it was the source of that intelligence, but it did try to downplay the episode that has played out in less than 24 hours since The Washington Post first reported it.
"Israel has full confidence in our intelligence-sharing relationship with the United States and looks forward to deepening that relationship in the years ahead under President Trump," Ron Dermer, the Israeli ambassador to the United States, told the Times in a statement.
National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster on Tuesday said Trump informing the Russians of the plot was "wholly appropriate."
However, the Times reported Israel had cautioned the U.S. about the handling of the intelligence.
"The Russians . . . can put together a good picture with just a few details," John Sipher, a 28-year veteran of the CIA, told the Times. "They can marry President Trump's comments with their own intelligence, and intelligence from their allies. They can also deploy additional resources to find out details."
At issue is how the plot, in this case, was uncovered and what the consequences could be for the operation and/or the undercover operative who ferreted it out.
