Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus Thursday ripped a news report that party officials would withhold critical voter data and other information from Donald Trump to bring him more in line with GOP policies and objectives.
"It's ridiculous," Priebus
told CNN's Jake Tapper
of the Politico report. "It's ridiculous. There's nothing about it that's true."
Politico quoted two unnamed sources as saying that Priebus has been saying in private meetings that GOP officials would not give Trump that crucial information needed to win a general election should he become the party's nominee.
"It's important for people to realize what's happening here," Priebus told Tapper. "These folks are competing to join our party.
"We have a nomination contest for the Republican Party — and our party is going to choose someone to join our party. We're not joining a candidate; they're competing to join us — and that's what happens in a nomination process.
"They're joining the party that's built up the resources, the mechanics, the ground game that they're going to need in order to win in November," he said. "It's a team effort ultimately when it's all done."
