Former Sen. Rick Santorum believes Donald Trump is on a roll and can be the next president of the United States if he doesn't veer from his increasingly disciplined campaign.

"The winds are behind him. This is a race that Donald Trump should win," Santorum, a Pennsylvania Republican, told CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Thursday.

"What Donald Trump needs to do, and I think he's proved it over last couple of weeks, [is] that he can be disciplined [and] someone we can trust to be able to execute on the things he says he wants to do."

Santorum, who ran for president in 2012 and 2016 and dropped out of the current race in February, said Trump "handled himself exceptionally well" during his trip to Mexico City on Wednesday.

And the billionaire real estate tycoon also seized the "middle ground" in his subsequent speech on U.S. immigration policy, Santorum added.

He also predicted Trump will bring non-voters to the polls this November and continue to gain more support from establishment Republicans.
