November's presidential election is a toss-up according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released Monday, which shows the two major party nominees tied on the eve of their first debate.

The results:

  • Hillary Clinton: 44 percent;
  • Donald Trump: 43 percent;
  • Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson: 8 percent;
  • Green Party's Jill Stein: 2 percent.

Among likely voters, Clinton and Trump are well ahead of third-party candidates Johnson and Stein. In a head-to-head matchup, Trump and Clinton each gain 3 percentage points, but remain tied.

Clinton and Trump have both improved compared to Quinnipiac's previous poll from Sept. 14, while Johnson and Stein have fallen slightly.

  • Clinton: 41 percent;
  • Trump: 39 percent;
  • Johnson: 13 percent;
  • Stein: 4 percent.

Over 80 percent of voters plan on watching the first presidential debate Monday night, with Clinton the favorite to win:

  • Clinton will win: 41 percent;
  • Trump will win: 32 percent.

"The race for president is a virtual tie and millions of likely voters consider the first debate must-see TV. And for those inclined to place a wager on the likely winner, Hillary Clinton is the best bet," said Tim Malloy, Quinnipiac University poll's assistant director.

"In this Super Bowl of American politics, the ratings will be huge and the contenders start dead even," he added.

The vast majority of voters think Trump is healthy enough to serve as president, while only slightly more than half say the same of Clinton:

  • Trump healthy enough: 73 percent;
  • Trump not healthy enough: 18 percent;
  • Clinton healthy enough: 58 percent;
  • Clinton not healthy enough: 31 percent.

One-third of voters reported that Trump's participation in the "birther movement" hurt their opinions of the candidate. Less than a quarter of likely voters said Trump's announcement that he now believes President Barack Obama was born in the United States affected their opinion of him.

Quinnipiac surveyed 1,115 likely voters nationwide from Sept. 22-25 by phone, with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points.
