Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton leads Republican rival Donald Trump by 9 points in New Mexico, according to a new voter survey conducted by Public Policy Polling.
The results, which include Libertarian Gov. Gary Johnson and Green Party's Jill Stein, shows Clinton with a strong advantage over Trump in the swing state:
- Clinton: 40 percent;
- Trump: 31 percent;
- Johnson: 16 percent;
- Stein: 4 percent;
- Undecided: 9 percent.
Johnson, who governed the state as a Republican from 1995 to 2003, received just 4 percent of the vote in New Mexico in the 2012 presidential election, when he was also the Libertarian candidate. This poll, commissioned by NM Political Report, is his best result in any state.
Clinton leads among both men and women in New Mexico, as well as with voters in every age group, particularly young voters, the new poll shows.
According to 270 To Win, the state is safely in Clinton's corner. President Barack Obama won the state in both 2008 and 2012 by more than 10 percent each time.
In July, New Mexico's Republican Gov. Susana Martinez, the first female Hispanic governor in the country, publicly condemned Trump's comments on Mexican immigrants, according to the Albuquerque Journal.
"I think those are horrible things to say about anyone or any culture … Anyone of any ethnicity," Martinez said about Trump's past statements. "I mean, that is uncalled for … completely."
Trump has heavily criticized Martinez, saying at a May campaign stop in Albuquerque that she "has got to do a better job. She's not doing the job," according to The Washington Post.
"Hey! Maybe I'll run for governor of New Mexico," he continued. "I'll get this place going. She's not doing the job. We've got to get her moving. Come on: Let's go, governor."
PPP surveyed 1,103 voters in New Mexico by phone from Aug. 19-21. No margin of error was given.
